It’s not unusual for me to cook, eat or shop for food in my dreams. The flavor is lacking – but so are the calories.
I recently had a detailed dream about infusing vodka with beef jerky. It looked something like this:

I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I shared the idea with many – all of them looked at me funny until I explained that the idea was to use the product for a Bloody Mary or Caesar. Then, almost all, unscrunched their faces and then shared some curiosity.
I was pretty certain it was a bad idea but I just couldn’t get it out of my head. For 3 whole days the idea just wouldn’t go away. I knew the only way to purge it was to serve it. And that’s when this was born:

I bought some beef jerky, cut it and placed it in a small mason jar. I then poured in enough vodka to cover it. It’s a very small batch – I figured if I had found culinary brilliance I would make another batch of jerky at home and really go to town.
After 3 days, the concoction was awful. It’s meat-tasting booze. Exactly what it should be – but not what I dreamed about.
Meat-infused cocktails are not just for dreams (or nightmares). Our friend Manny shared a link with me to a Moogarita and bacon infused vodka, bourbon and rye are not uncommon in some circles. Time Magazine even got into the action and featured an article on Drinks Infused with Meat in 2010.
The jerky has been pulled from the jar and we’ll wait a few months before the final verdict is passed. Infusions can mellow out and become far more subtle over time and perhaps some patience will pay off. I don’t think it will ever be as good as what I dreamed about.
